Shark Week

Stradbroke Island offers great diving year round and no better time to dive is in winter, with the promise of the Grey Nurse Sharks being present at Flat Rock, Cherubs Cave and Henderson’s.

Shark Week is dedicated to find out as much information relating to the habits of these creatures.

Our mission is to document each shark; male, female, length, unusual patterns or disfigurations of the shark is only part of what goes on. Each shark is unique, their body spots are like finger prints, photographic evidence of each shark taken helps to plot its travels and research into the how and why of each shark.
The program has been running now for 5 years and this year DiveXsite will be helping in the counting, photographing and researching into these beautiful creatures. I was involved in this program and on the first shark week, I found it very exciting and very much an eye opener.

To date over 400 sharks have been identified with more than 150 of those having been reported and identified in another locations.

So here is your chance to help out in research and dive with some mean looking but very harmless sharks.

  1. We will be diving Saturday thru to Tuesday 28th July – 31st July.
  2. We have a house available to us for this time.
  3. Dives will be conducted during the morning and the night time will be spent to your leisure.
  4. Costs for the trip are: $25 per night and $90 per double dive, gear is extra.
  5. You will need to bring the appropriate clothing and food if you are staying overnight.
  6. You can; come over early in the morning and return that afternoon, stay a night, stay the weekend, it’s your call.
  7. I will need to know by the 26th so as arrangements can be made.
  8. Transport over is via ferry and we will pick up and return on the island if need be.

During the week there will be contests for the best pics and also naming rights to newly spotted/ photographed sharks.
In previous years we have had visibility up to 40 mtrs and as many as 40 sharks in the water at one time. Not only do you get to see sharks but there is a big possibility of seeing Whales and dolphins, plus all the magical creatures of these sites.
